A Very Special CL Posada

Next Thursday (December 29), one of CL’s long distance members will be helping us put on our very own Posada. This is a custom that began in Mexico and is now celebrated in some Latin American countries, and in the Southwest. For the nine days leading up to Christmas in which people recreate the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. It’s a really cool custom, and we’re delighted to have our own version this year!

As always, we’ll meet at 7pm at St. Anthony school (see the Meetings page if you need directions). We’ll figure out the different parts then, and set up. Then we’ll have our Posada, and party! We’re asking people to bring the following things with them:

Food for the party
Candy for the pinata
A rosary (the Posada culminates in saying the rosary together in front of the creche.

Also, if you someone would be willing to supply the pinata, that would be awesome!

New Home for Catholic Life

Catholic Life is moving again! Although we loved Tank’s, a lot of other people love it too! Unfortunately, often that made it too noisy for us to be able to hear each other. So starting on December 1, CL will be meeting at it’s new home just down the hill from Tank’s at:

We will be meeting in the school library. Come in the side door of the school between the church and the school, walk down the steps, and turn left. You will see the library ahead of you on your right. Although there won’t be food available for purchase (I’m going to miss Tank’s couch potatoes!), we are free to bring food in, so don’t hesitate to bring your dinner with you. You could also bring a snack or treat to share if you like!

CL is Back!

Catholic Life is back from our Fall break! We had our first meeting of our new session last Thursday, where we brainstormed all the things we want to talk about. It looks like we’re going to have some very interesting topics coming up, including the Saints, Mary, a book study in January (we’re going to vote on which book to talk about this Thursday), talking about The Mass in February, and Catholicism in the Modern World during March. You can see the whole list on the Meetings page (just click on the link at the top of this page). If you’d like to help us by presenting on a topic, or if you’d like to suggest a speaker (particularly if you’re willing to be in charge of making arrangements with that speaker!) please comment on this post or on the Meetings page, or talk to Bernadette at one of the meetings.

We’re meeting at a new place this session: Tank’s Bar & Grill at 2033 Wayne Avenue in Dayton. This is one of our favorite places to hang out, so we’re very excited that they’re willing to have us meet there! They’ve got great food, and an incredible selection of beers, so join us for a little fun, fellowship, and sharing our faith.

Break and New Location!

CL weekly meetings will be on break until 10/27 due to the fall Theology on Tap Catholic speaker series (check out their website at totdayton.wordpress.com for a complete schedule).

When we do meet back on 10/27 we will be in a new location!! The new location is Tank’s Bar and Grill at 2033 Wayne Avenue in Dayton. We will be meeting at our usual time from 7-9pm every Thursday.

Wednesday, September 7 in honor of the Feast of the
Nativity of Mary. Many of you know of Dr. Hahn from
his books, tapes, DVDs, and numerous appearances
on EWTN radio and television. Don’t miss this great
opportunity to hear him as he speaks in our area! The
evening will begin with Eucharistic Adoration at 6:30.
It will continue with a concert of Marian music by the
Emmanuel Church Choir at 7:00, followed by Dr.
Hahn’s talk at 7:30. A reception will follow in the
church basement. This event is free!

Two Important Announcements

First, paintball has been cancelled today. On the facebook event wall, Jaime wrote:

My aunt just called me and said they got a lot of rain and the field is too wet to play. They are expecting more later also. So, unfortunately, we have to cancel the game today. She is worried that people could get hurt because there are a few hills. I’m really sorry about this, especially after we were working to get enough people to play. I’ll talk to everyone about rescheduling later if there is enough interest. Thanks again to everyone that was planning to go. Please respond to let me know you got this message.

We’ll be rescheduling as soon as we can figure out another date, so check back here or on the facebook event for details!

Second, we have a new start time for CL. Instead of meeting at 7:30pm every Thursday at Panera on Brown St. we will begin meeting at 7:00pm NEXT WEEK on June 30th. This will allow us even more time for our amazing topic discussion and fun socialization.

CL Summer Schedule

Last week at CL we brainstormed what topics we’d like to talk about over the summer, and put together our schedule. It looks like we’re going to have a lot of interesting things coming up, including talking about Vatican II, the Theology of the Body, being Catholic in the modern world, and lots more! You can see the full list on our Meetings page. We’re now signing people up to be presenters for August and September, so if you’re interested in helping out, let John or Bernadette know.

We also decided to try out a few new things. For the month of June we’re going to switch to talking about the Gospel from the previous Sunday instead of the upcoming Sunday. We thought it might be nice to be able to compare notes on the different perspectives our various parish priests gave us at Mass, and to carry the celebration over into the following week. We’ll check back in with everyone after a month and see if we like the change. If we do, it just might become our new way of doing things!

Also, we decided to open up the possibility for presenters to also share a short Saint story before the main presentation. If this is something you would like to do, please feel free to talk a little about the saint of the day, or maybe your favorite saint, or a saint that has something in particular to do with the topic you’re presenting on. Do keep the presentation short (five minutes or less) so that we have plenty of time to talk about our regular topic too.

Speaking of time, one recurring issue we’ve been dealing with is that we enjoy each others company so much that we regularly go over our 9pm end time. While the staff at Panera has been very gracious about us staying late, we want to be respectful of their time and stated closing hours. One of our members suggested that perhaps we should consider starting earlier (at 7pm instead of 7:30) in order to give us more time to get through our stuff before Panera closes. We discussed this at last week’s meeting, and will take a vote tonight. I’ll let you know what we decide!

And We’re Back!

CL will be starting back up this Thursday June 9th. It will be at our regular location of Panera Bread on Brown St. with gathering starting at 7pm and meeting starting at7:30pm and ending at 9pm.

Keep checking this website, as we will be updating the schedule and posting continued updates. Also, don’t forget to vote on dates for our retreat!
